The Blönduós Academic Center (BAC) was established in Blönduós in early 2012. The Center's main goal is to develop research, collaboration, and educational opportunities in rural Iceland. The Center has three main areas of focus – freshwater research, coastal communities research, and textiles.
BAC currently collaborates with universities and institutions within Iceland and also hosts visiting students and scholars working on projects related to the Center's areas of interest.

Main Arctic Projects
The Blönduós Academic Center houses the sea ice research and writings archive Þórsstofa. BAC’s coastal communities researcher served on a human dimensions panel for the Ecosystem Studies of Sub-Arctic Seas (ESSAS) program and does research in the Marine Ecosystem Sustainability in the Arctic and Sub-Arctic (MESAS) program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. BAC’s freshwater researcher studies the invertebrate ecology of northern stream and shallow groundwater systems along a thermal gradient to investigate potential shifts in ecosystem dynamics.
